Paul Tergat Foundation
Paul Tergat Foundation is a brainchild of an exemplary sportsman of all times and former Millenium Development Goals Champion.Dr. Paul Tergat.
The foundation started in 2005, provides a platform through which, Tergat in partnership with other like-minded individuals and organizations, give back to the community that nurtured him to be the world record-breaking marathoner in his hay days back in the 90s.
The Paul Tergat Foundation idea, in part, was harnessed following the appointment of its founder Paul Tergat as the WFP Ambassador against hunger. In this role, which he holds to date, Tergat creates awareness through advocacy under the school feeding program, on the impact hunger has on livelihoods.
The foundation covers the following program areas:
a. Environment
b. Sports
c. Education
Under this arm of the foundation, Tergat has been able to lend support to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in organizing various events in line with environmental conservation. This is in line with the foundation’s objectives because athletes following in his footsteps thrive in a clean environment.
Some of the events the foundation has helped organize for the UNEP include the 40th Anniversary in 2012 and celebrations on the enhanced status of UNEP that incorporates having universal membership from all countries in the United Nations, following the Rio Declaration.
Through these and many other similar events, renowned athletes like Patrick Makau have been appointed as clean environment ambassadors. Mr. Makau currently serves as the patron for ‘clean air’- in various organizations – a key factor that promotes optimum performance amongst athletes.
Paul Tergat Foundation also partnered with Green Africa Foundation and organized a race that sort to rally participants and community members to conserve the environment and plant trees as they enhance air circulation for sportspersons in training.
Under the sports arm, the Paul Tergat Foundation began an initiative that seeks to search, nurture, develop and expose budding athletes.
Through hosting and participating in grassroots’ events such as road races and cross country, the foundation has helped professionalize these events in the world of athletics and link amateur and established athletes to the world of competitive sports.
Paul Tergat Foundation together with FineTouch Communications Limited is the brainchild behind the Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) that seeks to honor and fete athletes who do the country proud but haven’t been recognized for their efforts to the country.
SOYA pays recognition to athletes from various sports disciplines with an exemplary performance that has not only won them global recognition but also has placed Kenya on the world map of great sports performance.
A criterion is used by a panel of about 15 judges to pick out the winners who are identified, nominated and voted for.
The prestigious SOYA gala has established a continued partnership with corporates like Safaricom Limited – who are the title sponsors – to motivate, recognize and reward top sportsmen and women for their exemplary performance.
SOYA began with 6 categories and has seen the addition of categories over the years to include the growth of the sportsman’s level of performance i.e. from promising to the conqueror.
This initiative set the bar and encouraged other institutions including government and individual sports federations to start a structured reward system for sports personalities who have represented the country well locally, across the continent and in the world stage.
Also as part of impacting communities, under the SOYA initiative, Paul Tergat Foundation has provided support to the Deaf-Blind School in Kabarnet, Baringo County.
Paul Tergat Foundation is in the process of providing support for reconstruction of Kerer Primary school, an institution that supports special needs children in Marakwet.
The foundation is working towards finalizing resource mobilization modalities that will provide engagement terms with partners and the community.
